Abstract

Iqbal’s philosophy is like a shining light for the Muslim Ummah. Through education, it does not limit human beings to only economic benefits, but guides them toward a purposeful, meaningful, and creative life. For Iqbal, education is not about memorizing words or collecting degrees, but a complete system that awakens the self, builds self-awareness, and inspires the desire to explore and master the universe. In his view, education is the power that shapes a person’s character and guarantees the collective awakening and progress of the Muslim community. This paper will highlight the link between Iqbal’s thought and educational reforms, showing how he closely studied both Eastern and Western systems of education. He admired the scientific progress and material comforts of the West, but also considered its lack of purpose and spirituality a serious weakness. He argued that true education should not only sharpen the mind and increase knowledge but also bring light to the heart and strength to the soul. That is why he supported an educational system that combined the guidance of the Qur’an and Sunnah with modern scientific research, so that it could help people achieve well-rounded excellence. This paper will also explain Iqbal’s vision of education and his wisdom in guiding the youth. He wanted young people to stay connected to their cultural and religious roots, while also gaining practical skills, creativity, and a spirit of research. He believed the curriculum should nurture qualities like sacrifice, service to humanity, and leadership.

To achieve this, he outlined some core principles: purposeful education focused on character-building and self-awareness, spiritual and moral training that raises human dignity, a balance between reason and love that enlightens both the mind and the heart, and a teacher-student relationship that provides not just instruction but also training and moral guidance. This paper will also compare today’s education system with Iqbal’s vision, showing how far it has drifted from his ideals. Today’s system is caught up in rote learning, chasing grades, and preparing for jobs, while ignoring moral training and real purpose. Our institutions may produce graduates, but not true leaders with wisdom and vision. This worrying situation shows the need to place Iqbal’s thought at the center of education policy. The curriculum should be redesigned to combine religious and worldly knowledge, promote research and creativity, and prepare students to become true builders of the Muslim Ummah. This paper will make it clear that for Iqbal, the goal of education is not just material progress but also the spiritual, moral, and intellectual awakening of the Muslim community. If we take his ideas as our guide, we can create an education system that will lift the Ummah out of decline and lead it again toward progress and greatness.
